The good news and the not-as-good news

Okay, the good news: All three Healers books are now processing with Draft2Digital, which means that they will soon be available in a worldwide slew of ebook and print-on-demand bookstore options. That’s all very cool, and I’m excited about it.

The downside, which has a hidden upside, is that the print prices are going up quite a bit — in the US it’s from $11.99 to $17.99. The print costs are higher at D2D than Amazon, so the minimums are higher. I’m still only making about two dollars per print book sale; I’m not doing this out of avarice.

The other, connected downside is that this price will override Amazon’s, because it seems I don’t have an option to fine-tune where the print book appears the way I do for an ebook. It’s everywhere, at the same price (converted to various currencies in various locations).

Now the hidden upside: I have heard that the print quality through this system is a lot nicer than Amazon’s. I hope so. If so, I believe the nicer-but-more-expensive print book will also appear on Amazon.

While all of this is processing, the print book is temporarily unavailable. There may be some fuckery in getting the print and ebook versions on Amazon to connect, which they might not at all considering I’ve gone through two different services to create them, but we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.

I’m learning as I go, but D2D’s system is quite simple so far. Once everything percolates through all the various channels, I’ll make sure the universal links used on this site are up to date. In the meantime, I thank any confused browsers for their patience.

EDIT, Feb. 5: Okay! I’ve learned some more things. I believe I can have both the original Amazon print-on-demand version there, and the other version elsewhere. These are identical in every way except perhaps print quality, which is out of my control. That means that the ‘Zon version doesn’t have to be $17.99. It’s currently at $12.99, in a weird guilt-stricken attempt to close the gap between the two?? Anyway.

Both print and ebook versions of all three books continue to chug away in the D2D system; a few take quite a while to go live, but most of those are library systems, and I don’t seriously expect anyone to get them through the library. (You can, if you want, depending on your library’s availability! I love libraries, I’m just saying I’m a small-timer here and don’t expect anything.)

The Books2Read universal book links have changed because of the expansion (ironic? dunno), but I’ll continue to try to refresh them with new outlets as they come online.

Once everything has settled down, I’ll make sure they’re complete. In the meantime, the ebooks are up on the biggest stores — Barnes & Noble, Kobo, and Apple Books — along with a bunch of others, and the print books should be live on B&N and Amazon.

After the Therapist omnibuses are out, we’ll look at some others that D2D doesn’t distribute to. Just so I can get it all done at once. (My work probably isn’t queer enough for the stuff I’m seeing on itch.io, and I respect that, but it’s still my frontrunner. On the other hand, I would now be able to sell digital versions directly on this site if we want to open that particular can of worms. Do I want to? Not particularly, but it’s possible.)

Until then, things seem to be working, so there’s nothing left to do but to stop procrastinating with this administrative stuff and get back to writing the next Therapist story.
