Hi. This isn’t a mea culpa or a request for respect. Just an attempt at transparency.
The following works of mine were produced without the use of AI, at least by me; I ask the cover artists I hire not to use “generative” AI, but I can’t fully police it.
Microsoft Word’s spellcheck was used on these works, if that meets your criteria.
- The Healers’ Road
- The Healers’ Home
- The Healers’ Purpose
- How I Became a Therapist in Another World books 1-8 (the first two omnibus volumes)
In late 2024, I made the decision to purchase ProWritingAid, which is an AI-powered spelling/grammar checking plugin/software. I don’t use this program for generating sentences or phrases, but I have used it for line-editing tasks like detecting frequently used words or repeated phrases, and copy-editing tasks like detecting punctuation mistakes. I use it to flag potential issues (many of which I ignore, because it is a carnival of false positives), then I fix the issues I deem to be legitimate by using my squishy human brain.
Works affected by this (currently in progress):
- The Strangers’ Shrine
- How I Became a Therapist in Another World book 9
Most of my line-editing process is done through rereading drafts and running searches in Word, and occasionally on paper. But I have used PWA as noted above for works edited after November 2024.
I don’t use AI knowingly in any other capacity, and I don’t knowingly use “generative” AI at all. Not to “brainstorm”, not for “feedback”, not for “research”. I don’t care what AI will be capable of in the future; I don’t care if you think I’ll be “left behind”; I don’t care if I’ll soon be outpaced by an army of bots writing self-insert porn for every reader on earth. Enjoy, if that’s what you want. I’ll pass.
However, if my use of PWA is past a line for you as a reader, I respect that. If you have a problem with it, don’t buy it or read it. That’s your choice. I understand if my decisions/actions seem hypocritical. I’ll live with that. I draw the line where I’m comfortable. Others are welcome to do the same for their own decisions.
That’s it. Thanks for your time.
